Wedding save the date cards are normally sent out 10-12 months before the wedding.  The earlier you can notify your family and friends that they are going to be invited to your wedding the better.  It will give them plenty of time to book time off work, confirm hotel reservations and organise travel.  Sending a personalised save the date card will increase the likelihood of your guests attending your celebration.  At this point, you may not have all the specifics, and that's ok.   Save the date cards should include bride and groom names, wedding date, location (a city/town is helpful, even if the venue isn't booked yet) and a notice of formal invitation to follow.
